Silicone Sponge for makeup application – HYPE?

Hi there!! This is a rare post on the blog today (hehehe), as I don’t do enough beauty product review anymore! But I really want to blog about this product! So….. what’s all this hype about Silicone sponges?

I totally missed the rave and hoo-haaa about SiliSponge, also known as “Beauty Blender Killer”. As a beauty blender user myself, I am all fired up to test and check out this sponge!
I first came across silicone sponges on BPS (again.. yes I stalk the site), and a pack of 3 was only $4.99. So I ordered it and forgot about them until they landed on my doorsteps few weeks ago. I have been trialing out the sponges for awhile and I would like to share my thoughts on them!

What is SiliSponge and the silicone sponges in general?
SiliSponge is a product invented by an indie makeup brand in HK called “Molly Cosmetics”, they sell the SiliSponge for around $9 but they are often a sell out on their site. SiliSponge is a flat sponge shaped silicone pad, yes it does look like “chicken filets”, or even gel shoe insoles! But these sponges are quite small! BPS ones measure at 4 by 6.5 cm.

These are technially NOT sponges, as the job of a sponge is to absorb. These silicone sponges have no pores like normal sponge, so that’s why it does not absorb any of the products. Hence, it has this huge claim on “zero product waste” and half the amount of normal product usage.
Huge claims, right?

My Tests
I have used my sponges with liquid foundations (YSL , Burberry Velvet), BB/CC Creams (TonyMoly and Eborian CC cream) and cream blushes.

First day, I was skeptical about it be able to half my product usage. So I squeezed out less than normal amount of foundation (around 70%) and started dabbing! The application with this sponge does take a bit of getting used to. Please do not use the sponge to push and rub the product onto your face! You will find that it is much easier to pat and spread! After quite a bit of dabbing and padding to make sure all the product is distributed evenly, I did look really *made* up. 70% of my normal amount is obviously too much when my sponge isn’t absorbing and wasting the rest!

For the rest of the week and after, I did get away with using just half or just over half. My make up still look natural and I much prefer this. This concludes how much my brush was absorbing if I had to *use* much more then. So to validate the point about saving product, I can vouch for that.

As you can see on my photos here, there is hardly any product left on the silicone sponge.

I wash my sponges with a makeup sanitiser soap or just hand soap, before drying the sponge with a soft tissue. I put it back into the clear tiny ziplock bag it came in, ready for next use.

Pros:

  • Virtually no product waste, so you will use less product. This means more money to buy other makeup to play with 😉
  • Quick, easy to clean and ready for next use (fab for makeup artists!?)
  • Squishy soft and non-scratchy (check before use! mine are pretty squishy)
  • Space saving, small and easy to carry and store. Great to take on holiday instead of foundation brush plus blush brushes!
  • Replicas are everywhere and pretty cheap

Cons:

  • Might feel delicate and prone to damages (ladies with sharp nails take care)
  • Application does take some practice
  • Might not *feel* natural to use flat sponge for around the nose, eye areas but with practise, it works just fine.

Where to buy:
Born Pretty store 1 piece for $1.99 or 3 pieces for $4.99 (free shipping)
Original SiliSponge, $9.90 https://www.mollycosmeticsshop.com/products/silisponge (free shipping)

My final thoughts: 3.5/5

Will I throw out all my makeup brushes and beauty blenders? No, but I welcome this little addition into my makeup kit. It is a joy to use (when you have time!), and easy to look after. I would recommend you to give it a go, it might change the way you apply your makeup and it might even save you money by reducing the amount of products you will need! You can pick some silicone sponges up for as little as $2. No harm I guess?

For me, I still do not think I have mastered the skills required in order to use this sponge effectively. It takes me longer to apply my makeup, and it won’t help me when I only get 15mins to rush out of my door every morning!

I do like this product, it is clever but it is not going to change my world completely.

Thank you and take care!
