When I was a kid, I always wondered why people wear red lipsticks? Being the shy little girl that I was, drawing attention to myself was the last thing I wanted. Little did I know, just how it can transform one’s mood!
Today I will be sharing my small Mac lipstick collection and swatches! They are five reds in five different formulations!
To some people all shades of red might look very similar, I couldn’t see the difference until I’ve started wearing the colour myself.
Why wear a red lipstick?
Red lipsticks are considered elegant and classic, it can makes the wearer’s makeup look immaculate.
Turn the simplest makeup look into something extraordinary. As if you’ve made alot of effort!
It is a classic colour that most people can wear regardless of age.
Some ladies find wearing reds give them more confidence.
There is a shade of red for everyone!
‘Red lipstick is a source of strength,’ says Poppy King, creator of Lipstick Queen. ‘You put it on and suddenly you feel more capable than you did without it.’
There are some simple tips for getting it right:
1. When wearing a red lips, wear simpler eye makeup. Lips will have a big impact with the attention catching shade!
2. To avoid red lipstick stain on your teeth. Wikihow
3. Apply carefully. Red looks best when it is done neatly. Apply with a lip brush and clean up with concealer around the mouth if you can.
4. Wear a matching red liner, it makes your lipstick last longer, the edges will look shaper and more defined.
4. Get the right toned reds. It is not a rule, but some makeup artists would recommend warmer reds on warm toned skin. Bluer reds on cooler toned skin. If in doubt, go and ask for advice at any Mac counters.
Ok here’s the review!
This is a true blue based red that’s brighter than its sister Russian red. It can appear red with a slight lean towards magenta on lips. The formulation is Satin, feels like a semi matte lipstick with a shocking punch of pigment!
Good but not completely full coverage with one swipe of product, it leaves a slight sheen on the lips.
It wears comfortably for at least 4 hours for me.
I do recommend this if you happen to like Russian Red, and/or think Russian Red is slightly too dark or too matte and drying.
Brave Red is a Cremesheen formula Mac lipstick. It feel creamy and looks dewy on the lips. This is a surprise to me as I have not expect myself to like it as much as I do!
This lipstick is very moisturising and comfortable to wear.
Russian red is medium red with neutral undertone. It is a matte finish lipstick and feel slightly drying on the lips.
Stays on for 6/7 hours+ when primed with Mac lip pencil in Cherry. You can also pair Russian Red with Brick lip pencil.
Stays on for 4 to 5 hours when worn alone. It does stain your lips very nicely. I don’t reapply unless it looks ridiculous!
Adding lip pencil in Cherry brightens the overall look. I prefer the brighter tone that it brings. This combo is almost indestructible! It lasts around 7 hours with minor touching up.
This lipstick shade would always be special to me. This is the recommended lip colour for my evening wedding gown by my photographer/former MUA. I enjoyed wearing this and it brings back lovely memories from the day.
Riri Woo is a special edition of the famous Ruby Woo. Rihanna was the spokeperson / promoter for this in 2014, it is slightly bluer than Ruby Woo and a tint darker. I cannot confirm as I do not own Ruby Woo!
This is one of my newest reds from Mac. In fact, I have not bought more Mac after this!
The formula of this lipstick is Retro Matte. It’s a matte but not as drying as the original Mac matte lipsticks, and it wears very comfortably.
Cockney is a sheer(ish) medium orange red with some tiny gold shimmery particles. It is very flattering on warmer skin tone. I believe this is a very good red for first timers, as it is sheer therefore easy to build up the intensity.
Cockney’s “lustre” formulation makes it easier to wear, the shade is really lovely but it does not last too long on the lips. I am happy to reapply as often as needed. You can see from the photos that this is my most used red!
This year Mac is repromoting some of their red lipsticks in a collection called “Red red red”, namely Lady Bug, Alarm, Toxic Tale, See Sheer and many other lipglasses.
Mac lipsticks are generally £15.50, and there’s a 10% off Beauty promotion at Debenhams.com until Sunday 1st March 2015. Perfect time to stock up maybe? Get shopping! 😛
If you don’t wear red lipsticks, would you try a red now? And if you do wear reds, do you have a holy grail red you would like to share with us?
