I can say I’ve upgraded my skincare routine! Being a skincare junkie I’ve always been careful and religious about the rituals! But this is crazy, I cannot believe I am writing one single post on skincare favourites!? Anyhow, 2014 has served me well and I think me and my skin has come to terms on how to live happily/calm. Pre-2014 was angry skin years, I get spots and acne, occasionally I get the insanely dry skin that makes any makeup application seems like a complete waste of time.
What I have learned in 2014 is that if I look after my skin it will look after me.
- I don’t have to pile on more makeup to look nicer
- Observe my skin and react before it gets too angry! If your skin doesn’t like a product, just STOP using it. Trust your gut feeling.
- Find what works with your skin might be easier than you think. If your skin is sensitive, just stay away from products with obvious irritants such as perfume, alcohol and parabens etc.
- What works for one person might not work for you. If you have found an ingredient that your skin love, maybe it is time to explore more about it!
My skincare routine might have become more complicated (thanks for Korean skincare rituals), but I believe it is worth the investment. Especially as I am seeing the first/second/third signs of ageing and it is scaring me big time. I understand that everyone will have to go through this stage sooner or later. For me, I want to delay the ageing process for as long as I can. 😛 I am just vain. THANK YOU 😛
Ok, enough blahing and onto the skincare product shortlist!
Scrubs and Peeling gels
Well I have stopped using scrubs that contains micro beads, as it is very damaging to the environment and not really too kind to the skin either. I do prefer peeling gels, such as Ginvera (link) and Innisfree red wine peeling softener. I also sugar scrubs that dissolve completely into warm water. I do scrubbing/peeling for at least once a week. You see, removing dead skin will aid product absorption!
During my weekly or bi-weekly scrubbing, I would also use nose strips. Many ladies find it harsh on their skin thou! Tread carefully and find the best way to take care of blackheads.
New discovery for me! Yes I’m late to the party again but better late than never! I love cleansing balms/oils as they work fast and clean thoroughly!
I’m very impressed with Emma Hardie Amazing Face Moringa cleansing balm. Typically, I was very curious and bought it after watching so many YouTubers raving about it.
I can still remember the very first time I’ve used it, it melts all my makeup away and it smelt like I was in an expensive spa and having a lovely facial. But it is very expensive product even with a promotion from Space NK 😛 (Go and have a sniff at it next time you come across it in a shop!)
In 2014, I have finished 2 bottles of Shu Uemura Fresh Pore Clarifying Cleansing Oils. It is the pink one, formulated for spot/acne prone skin types. It can be used before wetting your face or you can use it will wet hands. It feels extremely light and cleans effectively.
For cheaper alternative, I have been using Body Shop Camomile cleansing oil. It cleans just as well as expensive versions but it does feel heavier on the skin. It might not smell too fancy as well but it gets the job done!
I spent a good 3 months of 2014 on Eau Thermale Avène Gentle Gel Cleansers, as it is the gentlest cleanser I have ever come across! Avène uses French spring water in their range.
My absolutely favourite is the “Yes to Tomatoes” Face clarifying cleanser gel. It is just fabulous for my oily skin yet it does not strips out its natural oil. It leaves my skin clean and fresh. Big love!
ps. they are both non-foamy cleansers. Review on “Yes to Tomatoes” daily clarifying cleanser can be found here.
I’m taking a break from my favourite toner, Elemis apricot gentle toner. This year, the most impressed toner for me was the Clarins Iris alcohol free toning lotion. It is gentle on the skin, lightly fragranced and suitable for combination oily skin.
I’ve bought the 400ml and it is lasting me ages!
My absolute favourite essence is the Eon Wheat-Germ 97, I got this from one of the earlier memebox I’ve received back in August. It feels light and yet it yields really good results. It brightens and even out my skintone. Love this alot but I’m running out of this already.
I’ve been using two serums this year that really impresses me.
First one is the Sarah Chapman intense hydrating booster. It is a good serum contains hyaluron. To me, it helps retain moisture and plump up the skin! Yes skin feels like it’s sagging. .. sob sob
DKDN Snail Recover Intensive Serum, probably one of my very favourite serums. It took me awhile tlio get over the fact that it contains snail slime extracts. But it gives me so much that I have no problem slathering this onto my skin now. My skin cells plumper and lines are less visible. I just bought a backup, I’m good for another few months!
Ah.. something I was not convinced on for many years. I have combination oily skin, so when I first found out about facial oils I was adamant it will not work for me. “I don’t need more oil on my face”! But it really is a game changer for me. The best ever oil I have discovered in 2014 was the Kiehl’s Mignight Recovery Concentrate oil. It improved my skin overnight, and I do not think I can live without it! Gimme more!
Day and night creams
I failed to stick to one or two moisturisers to name a favourite. In place of a night cream, I’ve been using the facial oils.
Eye and Lip Care
I have been very loyal to Burt’s Bee this year, there are one on my desk at work, one in my current handbag and one by my bedside table 🙂 This is the set up for the last 5 years! My lips can be sensitive to some lip balms so I seldom change this routine.
For eye care, I have not had one that has been overly impressed with (yet). I am currently using a EGF one.
I never knew it was a good idea to use a mask overnight, yes, overnight without rinsing. But I guess “Why Not”? As that’s how night creams work anyway! haha
I’m very impressed with Sarah Chapman overnight facial, this substance feels like set honey from a jar.
It feels very nourishing and wake up with guaranteed better looking skin!
Sleeping pacts (masks) are one of Korean skincare staples. But I have not had an outstanding one to share with you. Maybe I’ll find one for 2015!
Yes I know this is a lot of skincare products, it feels like pampering every other night for me 🙂 You might not fancy a lengthy skincare routine like mine, but whatever you do, wear sunscreen 🙂 It really is the best thing you can do for your skin. It does not matter where in the world you live.
Okie, that’s all from me! I hope you’ve enjoyed these 2014 round-up posts! I enjoy sharing with you what has worked for me. Would love to hear about yours!
Bye bye 2014 and welcome 2015!
Best of luck and happy new year from me to you!
